BAGHDAD, Iraq — A U.S. Marine was killed in action today in Anbar province, a volatile, Sunni-dominated region west of Baghdad that includes Fallujah, Ramadi and Qaim on the border of Syria.

The region has been a center of anti-U.S. resistance.

The name of the Marine, assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, was withheld pending notification of family members, the military said. No details were released.

The death brought to 913 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department.

Of those, 678 died as a result of hostile action.
