Monday, May 31, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Aristide heads to South Africa; insists he's still Haiti's leader By Knight Ridder Newspapers
"There is one elected president of Haiti. There's not two. And it is me," Aristide said at a news conference in Kingston, before departing for Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. "As we prepare this return to the mother continent, we thank South African President Thabo Mbeki. It will now be our temporary home until we are back in Haiti." Aristide and his wife, Mildred, were whisked away in a Volvo sedan after their first public address in more than 10 weeks. The couple arrived in Jamaica after a short stay in the Central African Republic. Aristide resigned Feb. 29 but later called his departure a "modern-day" coup backed by France and the United States. U.S. officials have dismissed his assertions as "nonsense." Copyright © 2004 The Seattle Times Company
