KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jean-Bertrand Aristide left Jamaica yesterday, bound for South Africa, insisting he is still the rightful president of Haiti. He vowed to return, even while dismissing allegations that he profited from drug trafficking and stole millions of dollars from the impoverished nation's treasury.

"There is one elected president of Haiti. There's not two. And it is me," Aristide said at a news conference in Kingston, before departing for Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. "As we prepare this return to the mother continent, we thank South African President Thabo Mbeki. It will now be our temporary home until we are back in Haiti."

Aristide and his wife, Mildred, were whisked away in a Volvo sedan after their first public address in more than 10 weeks. The couple arrived in Jamaica after a short stay in the Central African Republic.

Aristide resigned Feb. 29 but later called his departure a "modern-day" coup backed by France and the United States. U.S. officials have dismissed his assertions as "nonsense."
