Yasmin Levy brings Ladino music to the Triple Door
Yasmin Levy performs Nov. 9 at the Triple Door in Seattle.
Yasmin Levy
If you don't know Ladino music, Yasmin Levy is a great place to start.
The beautiful Israeli chanteuse (whose father was also a popular singer) performs with a raw, deep passion in the Judeo-Spanish language of Ladino, an argot spoken by Spanish Jews (Sephardim) and later inflected with Turkish, Hebrew, Greek and other tongues. Akin to Portuguese fado and Spanish flamenco in its deep-throated soulfulness and acoustic-guitar flourishes, traditional Ladino music is being lovingly preserved and updated by world-music artists such as Levy, whose haunting voice and brooding odes tear at your heart.
For a taste of her new album, "Sentir," go to www.yasminlevy.net. 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Triple Door, 216 Union St., Seattle; $30 advance, $35 at the door (206-838-4333 or www.tripledoor.com).
