Roosevelt, Garfield and Newport high school jazz bands will attend New York's prestigious Essentially Ellington Festival in May.

Members of the jazz bands from Roosevelt, Garfield and Newport high schools are doing the happy dance this morning: They've been named finalists in the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition and festival to be held in New York City, May 8-10.
The bands are among 15 nationwide who have been invited to participate. They will attend workshops, play and compete for the opportunity to perform with Jazz at Lincoln Center artistic director Wynton Marsalis at Avery Fisher Hall.
Essentially Ellington is in its 14th year. All three of the current finalists have attended past festivals, with Seattle's Garfield and Roosevelt often battling it out for first place. Bellevue's Newport participated in 2001 and 2006.
