Garbage is coming to Bumbershoot. So is Lemony Snicket. The rock band featuring lead singer Shirley Manson, and the author of the popular "Series of Unfortunate Events" children's books, aka Daniel Handler, are on the final list of more than 2,500 artists who will participate in the 35th annual Seattle Center arts festival, set for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-5. Also on the list are Trey Anastasio, guitarist and vocalist formerly with the jam band Phish; rock 'n' roll founding father Bo Diddley, 76, known for creating his own distinctive beat; 1970s punk pioneers the New York Dolls; longtime hip-hop star Common, back on top with his new, No. 1 album, "Be"; romantic rock band Dashboard Confessional, featuring heartthrob Chris Carrabba; and the hard-rocking all-girl band the Donnas. Also coming to Bumbershoot are hip-hop veterans Michael Franti & Spearhead, British pop band General Public, singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding, Seattle rock band Harvey Danger, lively hip-hopper Talib Kweli, performance artist Meredith Monk, teen favorites Pepper, Los Angeles rappers The Pharcyde, former Wall of Voodoo singer Stan Ridgway, singer-guitarist Chris Stamey, harmonizing twins Tegan & Sara and zydeco great Buckwheat Zydeco. They join already announced attractions Devo, Ani DiFranco, Tift Merritt, Digable Planets, Brazilian Girls, Keren Ann, Sonny Landreth, the Decemberists, the Gospel Hummingbirds, Billy Preston, Billy Joe Shaver, Duke Robillard and Mavis Staples. Garbage will make up for the Paramount appearance that was postponed in April, with a Mainstage show on the festival's opening day. Snicket/Handler will perform with SMART, a group made up of fellow author/musicians Dave Eggers, Sarah Vowell and Mike Doughty, and the Translantic Orchestra. Among participants in Literary Arts programs will be Nancy Pearl, Aaron Counts, Amber Curtis, J.W. Marshall, Kevin Sampsell, Larry Lee Palmer, Priya Keefe, Vis-à-vis Society and Quasimodo & the Bellringers. Dance will feature Wade Madsen, STREB from Brooklyn and Buttrock Suites. The 1 Reel Film Festival will include a film shot during last year's Bumbershoot. Among comedians set to play the festival are Aziz Ansari, Todd Barry, Mike Birbiglia, Greg Fitzsimmons, Flight of the Conchords (New Zealanders Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie), Paul Gilmartin, Jackie Kashian, Eugene Mirman, Patton Oswalt, Craig Robinson and Nick Swardson.
Advance tickets, $18 a day, $30 for two days, $55 for all four days, and $5 a day for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older, are on sale exclusively at www.bumbershoot.org. They go on sale Friday at Ticketmaster outlets, and Aug. 5 at Western Washington Starbucks stores. On Aug. 26, ticket prices will rise to $28 a day, $40 for two days, $80 for four days, and $8 a day for children and seniors.
