Valentine's Day brings two treats to DVD: Johnny Depp in "The Rum Diary" and Michael Shannon in "Take Shelter." Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services. For full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com.
"Take Shelter" (R): Jeff Nichols' thriller, a variation on the Noah story, "is a knockout," says movie reviewer John Hartl, which may leave you "both shaken and stirred by its ambiguously apocalyptic vision of a future that seems quite plausible." It follows a man (Michael Shannon), plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, who finds himself driven to build a costly shelter as a defense against tornadoes. Or not.
"The Rum Diary" (R): British filmmaker Bruce Robinson's adaptation, based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson, chronicles the woozy misadventures of a young American reporter (Johnny Depp) in Puerto Rico in 1960. Depp's performance is right on target, says movie reviewer Soren Andersen.
"Mozart's Sister" (not rated; for mature audiences): The flip side of "Amadeus," this story is told from the point of view of Nannerl (Marie Féret), who played for the courts of Europe with her brother but never had a musical career of her own. In French, with English subtitles.
