The dark, alternative worlds of "Coraline" and "Watchmen" come to life on DVD, among today's new releases. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services (for full reviews, search the movie title at seattletimes.com).
"Coraline" (PG): In Henry Selick's stop-motion animation production, based on Neil Gaiman's popular children's book, an 11-year-old girl (voiced by Dakota Fanning) finds a secret door, and through it discovers a strange new world where cats talk and her Other Mother (Teri Hatcher, in a dual role) wants to alter Coraline's eyes to match hers. Might be scary for young children.
"The Great Buck Howard" (PG): Sean McGinly's comedy, a fictionalized tribute to "The Amazing Kreskin" of '70s TV fame, stars John Malkovich as a fading entertainer hoping for a comeback.
"Watchmen" (R): Zack Snyder's film adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons follows a group of costumed superheroes — including the all-blue and frequently naked Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), who has the ability to control matter — and their intertwining stories in 1985 New York.
