7 p.m. — 3 stars"(500) Days of Summer": "This is not a love story," a voice-over tells us at the beginning of Marc Webb's smart, funny film. He's right, but this anti-rom-com creates a quirky charm of its own. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) meet, date, canoodle and talk a lot about whether love exists; the zippy forward-and-back screenplay keeps things lively and Gordon-Levitt (all cutely sweater-vesty) and Deschanel find truth in every scene. Good fun. — Moira Macdonald

7 p.m. — 3 stars"Cold Souls": Highly original in a "Being John Malkovich" way, this dark comedy stars Paul Giamatti as some version of his real self, consenting to have his soul extracted by a corporation and then instantly regretting his decision. Writer-director Sophie Barthes convincingly imagines an international black market in soul trafficking, though the most fun stuff finds Giamatti rehearsing the lead in "Uncle Vanya" with and without his spiritual essence. — Tom Keogh
