Ed Harris' "Appaloosa" leads a pack of new DVDs being released this week. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services (for full reviews, search the movie title on seattletimes.com).
"Appaloosa" (R): Harris and Viggo Mortensen make perfect pardners as lawmen for hire in this Western set in 1882 New Mexico.
"Brideshead Revisited" (PG-13): Emma Thompson stars in Julian Jarrold's screen adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel, which was also made into an acclaimed 1981 TV miniseries. It follows a young man's romantic involvement with the siblings of a grand country estate in 1930s England.
"Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (PG-13): Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall form a love quadrangle in Woody Allen's featherweight relationship comedy filmed in a beautiful Spanish light.
"Swing Vote" (PG-13): In Joshua Michael Stern's melodrama/political satire, Kevin Costner plays an amiable yet neglectful single dad who winds up with the deciding vote in a presidential election.
"Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys" (PG-13): Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard head a fine cast as Atlanta matriarchs in Perry's melodrama of sibling rivalry, infidelity, power plays and terminal illness.
"My Best Friend's Girl" (R): Howard Deutch's romantic comedy puts Kate Hudson in the middle of a love triangle, with Jason Biggs as the guy she dumped and Dane Cook as his best buddy, whom he goes to for help.
"Mirrors" (R): Images in mirrors threaten the family of a disgraced ex-cop (Kiefer Sutherland) in Alexandre Aja's supernatural mystery.
