"Space Chimps," "Fred Claus" released on DVD this week
A weekly listing of new DVDs.
Here are some of today's DVD releases. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services (for full reviews, search www.seattletimes.com).
"Space Chimps" (G): Kirk De Micco's computer-animated comedy features Andy Samberg as the delightful voice of a wisecracking chimp hero who is sent into a galaxy-crossing wormhole.
"Fred Claus" (PG): Here comes Santa's disgruntled older brother, played by Vince Vaughn, in David Dobkin's holiday comedy. The cast also includes Paul Giamatti, Kathy Bates, Kevin Spacey, Rachel Weisz and Miranda Richardson.
"Meet Dave" (PG): This kid-friendly sci-fi gagfest is about a spaceship that looks like Eddie Murphy, inhabited by a miniature crew captained by Eddie Murphy. Their mission: to deploy a tiny orb into Earth's ocean so that their home planet can be saved from extinction (they need the salt).
"Hancock" (PG-13): Peter Berg's sort-of comedy stars Will Smith as a washed-up Los Angeles superhero who drinks, grumbles, accidentally destroys cars and buildings, and lurches and weaves instead of soaring smoothly like Superman. Charlize Theron, as a woman with a Dark Secret, and Jason Bateman co-star.
"The Spy Who Came in From the Cold": Martin Ritt's chilling 1965 adaptation of John le Carré's Cold War thriller, with Richard Burton and Claire Bloom, gets a DVD makeover.
