A weekly listing of new DVDs.
Here are some of Tuesday's DVD releases. Star ratings are by Seattle Times movie reviewers, freelancers or wire services (for full reviews, go to www.seattletimes.com/movies).
"Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (R), Tim Burton's film version of the Stephen Sondheim musical about a murderous barber (Johnny Depp) and a cheerily amoral baker (Helena Bonham Carter). And yes, Depp can sing. He also earned an Academy Award nomination.
"Fiorile" (PG-13), a 1993 foreign-language favorite from Italian siblings Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, chronicling the consequences of a family curse. Two other Taviani classics are also available: "The Night of the Shooting Stars" (1982), a drama focusing on a small Italian town whose residents are in limbo between Nazi occupiers and their American liberators as World War II nears an end; and "Kaos" (1984), an anthology of tales based on stories by Luigi Pirandello.
"Alvin and the Chipmunks" (PG), Tim Hill's film combines animation and live action. It stars Jason Lee as a songwriter who takes in three singing rodents (voiced by Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney).
"Bette Davis Collection: Volume Three," a set including "The Old Maid," "All This, and Heaven Too," "The Great Lie," "In This Our Life," "Watch on the Rhine" and "Deception."
