Who needs a statue with all this swag?

LOS ANGELES — For Oscar nominees, presenters and sometimes even lowly attendees, Christmas extends through awards season. All over Los Angeles, generous companies are preparing treatments and wares worth tens of thousands of dollars to bestow on celebs.

A tenacious nominee can procure upwards of $1 million in less than a week. Not a bad way to start spring.

Gifts are most often given in one of two formats — in a "basket" (filled with products and certificates) or at the ever-proliferating Oscar suites, in which "free shopping" transcends its oxymoronic meaning.

"Since the Oscars are indisputably the biggest award show and involves the most marketable movie stars, it's the one most companies want to be involved with," says Lash Fary, owner of Distinctive Assets, which will present this year's non-winning nominee gift basket (valued at more than $50,000). Distinctive Assets is an entertainment marketing company specializing in celebrity gifting at high-profile events.

But wait, there's more: The motion picture academy gives its own gift bag — worth more than $100,000 — to all the presenters and performers.

An appearance in an Oscar suite (which usually is housed in swanky hotels or mansions) in the days before Sunday's Academy Awards presentation can garner photographs of celebrities and a prominent and enviable mention in subsequent press kits.

"The perceived value of your product or service increases by associating it with top celebrities and a glitzy Hollywood event," says Fary.

One local ophthalmologist, Dr. Kerry Assil, gives $5,800 Lasik procedures to stars at Hollywood's biggest events, Fary says.

"If you visit his Santa Monica offices and view the wall of celebrity-autographed headshots who have used their gift certificates, you'll realize it's a strategy that has clearly paid off for him."

So just in case you're not nominated or presenting this year, here's a peek at some of the goodies awaiting the likes of Reese Witherspoon and George Clooney:
