Report: Nokia to release new, cheaper Windows Phone
Nokia will debut a new, cheaper Windows Phone next week, according to a Reuters report.
Citing "two sources close to the company," Reuters said the move is to target a wider market for smartphones.
Targeting that wider market is essential to both Nokia and Microsoft's success in their battles for global smartphone market share. Just a few years ago, both companies had a significantly larger share of the global mobile phone market. Now, they're scrambling to catch up with companies such as Apple and Samsung.
Windows Phone's shipments in 2011 accounted for just 1.4 percent of worldwide smartphone shipments, according to research firm Canalys.
Nokia agreed last year to use Windows Phone as its operating system on most of its smartphones.
Reuters says Nokia is set to unveil its new phones -- which also include the Lumia 610 and a global version of the Lumia 900 -- next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
