Nokia released its fourth quarter earnings today, confirming analysts' estimates that it's sold more than a million Nokia Lumia phones that run Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said in Nokia's fourth quarter and annual results interim report that "to date we have sold well over 1 million Lumia devices," and that "we also plan to bring the Lumia series to additional markets including China and Latin America in the first half of 2012."

The report also says that Microsoft gave Nokia EUR 180 million (which Nokia converted in its report to USD $250 million) in platform support payments during the quarter. Nokia and Microsoft have a partnership in which Windows Phone is the operating system on most of Nokia's smartphones. Microsoft pays Nokia platform support payments for that; and Nokia pays software royalty payments to Microsoft. Elop's report says that "over the life of the agreement, both the platform support payments and the minimum software royalty commitments are expected to measure in the billions of US Dollars."

Overall, Nokia continued logging heavy losses.

It listed operating losses of EUR 954 million for its fourth quarter, equal to about USD $1.25 billion with today's exchange rate. For all of 2011, Nokia had an operating loss of EUR 1.07 billion -- or about USD $1.4 billion.

Its net loss for the quarter was EUR 1.08 billion -- or USD $1.42 billion.

"While we progressed in the right direction in 2011, we still have a tremendous amount to accomplish in 2012," Elop wrote.
