Report: Microsoft and Nokia spending $200 million to market Windows Phone

Microsoft and Nokia will be spending a bundle this year -- some $200 million -- to market Windows Phone in the U.S., reports Paul Thurrott at Windows IT Pro.

Citing internal Microsoft documentation, Thurrott writes that Nokia is outspending MIcrosoft 2-to-1 on the marketing, at least on AT&T Windows Phones, and that sales incentives for retail workers are part of the plan.

Thurrott's full article is here.

Windows Phone has had a tough time gaining traction in the marketplace and last month, Windows Phone President Andy Lees was moved to a new position at Microsoft.

In the third quarter last year, Microsoft's smartphone platforms had 1.5 percent of the worldwide market, down from 2.7 percent a year ago, according to research firm Gartner.

In the U.S., Microsoft's smartphone platforms had 5.2 percent of the market for the three months ended in November, according to comScore. That was down from 5.7 percent for the three months ended in August. Here's comScore's chart:
