Microsoft announces first major service update for Office 365

Microsoft today announced is first major service update for Office 365, its cloud-based suite of productivity services for businesses. It also announced that Office 365 will now be available to try in 22 additional markets including Argentina, Iceland, Indonesia, South Africa and Taiwan.

The service update will include more than 30 new features and enhancements to Office 365 and SkyDrive, Microsoft's personal cloud-storage service, according to the news release.

The updates include:

  • Support for Lync for Mac

  • New SharePoint Business Connectivity Services

  • Support for Windows Phone 7.5

  • Simpler app-centric sharing for Office and easier uploads with HTML5 in SkyDrive

"Customers are adopting Office 365 eight times faster than our previous service, and the solution is on track to become one of our fastest-growing offers in Microsoft history," Kurt DelBene, president of Microsoft's Office division, said in the news release. "We are also seeing great traction with small businesses, with more than 90 percent of our early Office 365 customers coming from small businesses."
