Bill Gates fifth most powerful person in the world, says Forbes
Posted by Janet I. Tu
Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, whom Forbes recently named the richest person in America, has made another Forbes list.
This time, the magazine has named him the fifth most powerful person in the world, behind President Barack Obama, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, China's President Hu Jintao, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On Forbes' list, Gates ranked ahead of Pope Benedict XVI (No. 7), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (No. 9), UK Prime Minister David Cameron (No. 10), and Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos (No. 40).
As Forbes put it, the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation "is having the most productive midlife crisis in history. His focus on creating, promoting and distributing vaccines is having a massive impact on global health."
Today, Gates is expected to address world leaders at the G20 economic summit in Cannes, telling them that cutting foreign aid budgets is counterproductive, according to The Toronto Star. He is also expected to tell them that they could raise the money for that aid by levying a small tax on share and bond trading, according to The Guardian.
