Report: Microsoft to get green light from EU for Skype deal

Posted by Janet I. Tu

The Financial Times is reporting that the European Union is set to approve Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Skype, clearing a big hurdle for the software giant's purchase of the Internet phone company.

Microsoft announced its planned $8.5 billion purchase of Skype in May. The proposed purchase must get regulatory clearance from several countries in order to proceed. In June, the proposal won the approval of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Microsoft is set to win Brussels' approval for the proposal and Joaquin Almunia, the EU competition commissioner, is set to clear it as well without imposing any further investigations "in spite of complaints from would-be rivals over Microsoft 'bundling' the software with Windows," The Financial Times reported in a Wednesday story.

The acquisition would be the largest in Microsoft's history.
