Skype launches app store

Posted by Janet I. Tu

Skype has launched an app store, or as it's calling it, an app directory, with a list of third-party apps that were built on Skype's platform.

The apps include those for audio and video call recorders, desktop and whiteboard sharing and faxing. Apps are available for Windows as well as Mac.

Skype members don't actually buy or download the apps through Skype but instead are directed to developer websites or app stores where they can get the software, according to GigaOM.

In recent months Skype has announced or launched many products and partnerships, including an app optimized for iPad, video support for additional Android devices for Skype for Android, and a partnership with Facebook enabling video chat within Facebook.

Microsoft announced its purchase of Skype for $8.5 billion in May. The deal was cleared by the U.S. Justice Department in June, and is now awaiting approval from the European Union before it is finalized.
