The mobile game Angry Birds is finally available for Microsoft's Windows Phone.

The game, made by Rovio, began selling in the Windows Phone Marketplace on Tuesday night for $2.99. Players sling rotund birds at stone and wood structures in the game.

Microsoft finally getting Angry Birds is like Dustin Ackley getting called up to the Mariners. (To be clear, the Birds are the big leagues in this analogy.)

In April, Microsoft said Angry Birds would be ready on May 27. In May that was delayed to June 24. The game officially became available on June 28.

Microsoft needs all the street cred it can get because Windows Phone is trailing far behind Apple's iPhone and Google's Android platform. The company has an important strategic partnership with Nokia to make Windows Phone its primary smartphone platform, but that partnership has yet to deliver a phone.

Windows Phone developers take note: A new set of tools for building apps became available Wednesday. Tools Beta 2 is now available, and will include features for Mango, the code name for a significant software upgrade that Windows Phone will get later this year.
