"Warm mangos" search stumps Google CEO Larry Page

Posted by Sharon Chan

Larry Page, chief executive officer of search giant, was stumped by a search for "warm mangos."

Google Principal Engineer Matt Cutts talked about Page's frustration at a session at the search marketing conference SMX in Seattle on Tuesday night.

Danny Sullivan, editor SearchEngineLand.com, conducted a Q & A with Cutts about what Google is doing to reduce spam websites that show up in search results.

Cutts said Page, who recently became CEO, wants Google to move faster than it has in the past and gave as an example, a complaint Page made about the search for "warm mangos."

The team working on improving search quality could not figure out what Page wanted, and finally asked him what he had been searching for. Page said he wanted to know why mangos warm up when they're inside a box.

The answer, Cutts said, is that mangos produce carbon dioxide, which heats up in a closed container.

Neither a search on Google nor its competitor Bing this morning turned up the answer in the first page of results.

Stefan Weitz, search director for Microsoft's Bing is scheduled to speak this morning at Bell Harbor Conference Center.
