Report: Microsoft will pay Nokia billions of dollars

Posted by Sharon Chan

BARCELONA - Microsoft will pay Nokia billions of dollars in marketing as part of the partnership to put Windows Phone 7 on Nokia smartphones, the Associated Press reported Sunday.

Nokia has "substantial value to contribute," Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop told the AP. Elop is the former president of Microsoft Business division, which makes Office. Nokia, based in Finland, is the world's largest phone maker that has been hurt in the smartphone market by competition from Apple's iPhone and competitors' phones that run Google Android.

In response to an AP question whether Elop was a Trojan horse for Microsoft at Nokia, he said no.

Check out the full AP report here.
