Microsoft donates $2M to help veterans find jobs
Posted by Sharon Pian Chan
Microsoft is giving $2 million in cash and up to $6 million in software to help veterans find jobs.
The funding will go to nonprofits that provide training, education and placement programs for veterans transitioning from military service back to the civilian work force.
One recipient is Bellevue College's Project SUCCEED. The others are Able-Disabled Advocacy in San Diego; Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont in Charlotte, N.C.; Gulf Coast Workforce Board in Panama City, Fla.; Per Scholas in New York and Miami; and Veterans Inc. in Worcester, Mass.
Each organization will receive the funding and software over two years to provide technology skills training, job placement and career counseling, as well as services such as child care, transportation and housing. Microsoft worked with veterans services organizations to develop this project.
“More and more jobs in every sector of the economy demand technology skills,” said Curt Kolcun, vice president, U.S. Public Sector, at Microsoft in a statement. “By partnering with organizations that have demonstrated expertise in education and skills training programs, we are proud to help provide resources to veterans and their spouses who need these skills to help them in the transition to civilian work and life.”
Microsoft made the announcement Wednesday, the day before Veterans Day. The company is also doing a Kinect giveaway for veterans. Here is where military members can enter the Kinect drawing.
