Microsoft wins case against giant botnet Waledac

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

Microsoft has won a case against a giant botnet called Waledac, a network of tens of thousands of computers that spread viruses, spam and malware.

A judge in U.S. District Court in Eastern Virginia has indicated that he will recommend that the court rule in favor of Microsoft, the company said in a blog. The defendants will have to transfer 276 domain names to Microsoft. They still have 14 days to object, but apparently they never showed up in court to present a defense, Microsoft said in its blog.

Microsoft says that the defendants launched a denial-of-service attack on the law firm representing the company in the case.

Botnets work by planting code on computers, and then using those computers to send spam, viruses and other online attacks. At its height, the Waledac network had infected 64,000 computers, Microsoft said.

The lawsuit was part of Microsoft's overall efforts to reduce cybercrime.
