Microsoft employees will all get a Windows Phone 7

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

All Microsoft employees will get a Windows Phone 7 device when the smartphone comes out later this year.

The company made the announcement Wednesday to employees at the Microsoft Global Experience conference taking place in Atlanta, according to spokesman Lou Gellos.

Employees will not be charged for the phone, but they will have to pay for the wireless service.

Microsoft has rebuilt its mobile operating system to compete with, among others, Apple's iPhone and Google Android phones. Phones built on Microsoft's mobile OS are expected to start selling during the holidays this year.

The company has 88,180 employees globally.

The news will help Microsoft distance itself from the Kin phone, which died a quick death in June a month after it began selling. Microsoft developed the Kin phone for tweens who are heavy social network users.
