Free Web version of Microsoft Office now available

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

A free Web version of Microsoft Office has begun rolling out.

Office Web Apps is a new version of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote available to anyone with a Web browser. Users can create, edit and share spreadsheets, documents and slideshows free of charge, whether or not they have Office software installed on their computers.

Like Google Apps, the software is cloud-based. The files are all saved online rather than in a desktop computer or a thumb drive.

Users get 25 gigabytes of storage, and Microsoft is running the service through its free online storage site called SkyDrive.

The service will take several weeks to roll out to users in U.S., United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland, but you can start using it now by going to http://office.live.com.

You can upload Office docs to the site, simultaenously work on the same document with someone else via the Web and create documents.

And here is Microsoft's blog item about the Office Web Apps rollout.

Here is a screenshot of a Word document in Office Web Apps below.
