Free Office Web Apps from Microsoft rolls out June 15

Posted by Sharon Chan

NEW YORK -- Office Web Apps, the Web version of Office 2010 that Microsoft will offer for free to compete with Google Docs, will begin rolling out on June 15.

Chris Capossela, senior vice president of the Microsoft Business division, said in a Q-and-A session with the press today that it would take several weeks to reach everyone. The Web Apps will be available through Windows Live.

"It's not as coordinated as the retail launch, where you should be able to walk into any store and see shrink-wrapped product," he said. "It's a little bit of rolling thunder."

For instance, when the company upgrades Hotmail, it usually goes to several million people a day, he said, rather than switching several hundred million people at once.

June 15 is when copies of Office 2010 begins selling in retail stores to small business and individual buyers.

Microsoft launched the software for business customers today at an event in New York.
