New Microsoft Bing ad spoofs Latin soap operas

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

Microsoft has rolled out two new television commercials in hopes of gaining more traffic for its search engine Bing.

This first ad, "Los Links Episode Uno," spoofs Spanish-language soap operas. It's a departure from the search overload ads.

Spoofing Spanish-language soap operas has been trending over the past few years, with the popularity of the TV sitcom "Ugly Betty," which features mock soap opera footage. We can't have any conversation about spoofing Latin soap operas without referencing the 2009 "Generalissimo" episode of "30 Rock," in which Jack Donaghy tries to woo a woman played by actress Salma Hayek. Her character's abuela hates Jack because he looks like the villain of a beloved Spanish-language soap opera.

Here's a clip from that "30 Rock" episode:

The second new Bing ad is more like the previous search overload ads:

As of the last round of data from research firm comScore, Bing had 12 percent of search traffic and Google had 65 percent.
