Microsoft adds Foursquare to Bing Maps
Posted by Sharon Pian Chan
Microsoft is adding Foursquare, the mobile location service, to Bing Maps.
Foursquare allows users to register their location through their cellphones, share it with their friends and win the title of "mayor" of a specific location. At the SXSW conference, for example, it became a popular way for attendees to meet up with friends and find events happening each day.
Microsoft previewed the Foursquare feature and a few others today at the Search Engine Strategies (SES) New York conference in a speech by Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of the Online Audience Business in Microsoft's Online Services division.
With the Bing Map integration, users will be able to use the search-engine maps to see where their friends are checking in on Foursquare. The screenshot above shows a map of the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle.
Todd Schwartz, a Bing engineer who blogged about the new feature in the Bing Community blog, wrote the goal is "to give customers a real time sense of what’s going on as they plan activities in their own neighborhoods or while on the road."
The Foursquare feature starts rolling out today to all Bing Map users.
Also, Microsoft previewed a quick-tab feature and auto-search feature in Bing, which you can check out on its blog. The quick tabs feature will be tested on five percent of Bing users. The auto-search feature will start rolling out Thursday to all users.
