What Microsoft would not say about Windows Phone 7
Posted by Sharon Chan
Microsoft held a news conference at the Redmond campus Monday morning following the preview Chief Executive Steve Ballmer gave of Windows Phone 7 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Here is what Microsoft would not say in response to questions about Windows Phone 7. Product managers said they wanted to save the developer story for Mix, a conference in March.
- What Xbox games will be available on Xbox Live and how they will play on a phone compared to a television.
- Whether it will integrate Twitter (Facebook comes included).
- What the minimum hardware specifications are, other than the phones will have at minimum, a 5-megapixel camera.
- How much device makers can customize the standard start screens.
- Whether there will be an app store like Windows Marketplace for Mobile for Windows Mobile 6.5.
Does Microsoft think Windows Phone 7 is better than the iPhone?
"I believe this phone is different," said Gian Wilson, product manager for the mobile business at Microsoft.
Will the phones support video-software Adobe Flash, which is now a big deal because the Apple iPad does not?
"We do not support Flash. We are partnering closely with Adobe. As Steve Ballmer said earlier, we are not opposed to having flash on the platform," said Karen Wong Duncan, another product manager.
Why would anyone buy one of the 50 models of Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones that are going to come out this year before the new Windows Phone 7 comes out?
"We are happy with what we have in the market now," said Duncan.
