Windows executive Bill Veghte is leaving Microsoft

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

Bill Veghte, the former senior vice president for the Microsoft Windows team, is leaving the company at the end of January. Veghte has worked at Microsoft for 19 years, in the Windows, Office and server businesses. He was in charge of marketing that led up to the launch of Windows 7 in October.

Chief Executive Steve Ballmer sent an e-mail to Microsoft executives that was posted on the company's Web site today. Ballmer said in the posting:

"Bill has indicated a desire to run a business in a more end-to-end fashion and continue to explore new areas in the broad technology, communications and services sectors."

The full posting is here, and I first saw this news reported out of CNET's Beyond Binary blog.

In July, the company promoted Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president of engineering for the Windows team, to the position of president of the division. At the time, the company said Veghte would be named to a new leadership role later in 2009. Tami Reller, the chief financial officers of Windows, took over the marketing responsibilities for Windows.

Here is our earlier story on that executive shake up.
