UPDATE: Microsoft foils Mac fans' attempt to hijack Saks window

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

Update 12:09 p.m.:

Microsoft says it foiled attempts by Mac fans to hijack their Twitter feed in the Saks Fifth Avenue window display in New York. The Huffington Post earlier reported that Mac fans were using the #holidaywindows hashtag Microsoft had set up for holiday wishes to instead promote Apple products.

The company just released a statement saying:

"...There are filters in place. ... This filter includes any attempt to spam the windows with negative commentary that is not in the spirit of the holidays. The windows have not been hijacked"

In other words: Eat it, @Alyssa_Milano!

Earlier 10:18 a.m.:

The Huffington Post reports today that the Microsoft window display at Saks in New York has been hijacked by Mac fans via Twitter.

Microsoft set up a window display at the Saks Fifth Avenue store, featuring scenes from the store's holiday book, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Flake." To promote Windows 7, Microsoft installed 20 video monitors to animate scenes in the book. Singer/actress Kristin Chenoweth even showed up at the window unveiling on Monday.

One monitor is dedicated to a Twitter feed for Tweets that use the hashtag #holidaywindows. The company had hoped shoppers would Tweet about their holiday wishes.

The Huffington Post reports that the hashtag has been flooded by Tweets from Mac fans, such as "I'm a PC... but I want to be a MAC!!! Can anyone save my life? #holidaywindows"

Checking to see whether Microsoft is going to let it ride. Here is the company's press release about the Saks promotion.
