Report: Microsoft in settlement talks with European Union

Posted by Sharon Pian Chan

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is in talks with the European Union to settle two antitrust investigations.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations, the Bloomberg report said Microsoft wants to reach an agreement before EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes steps down at the end of the year. The EU has already fined the company $2.4 billion in previous antitrust cases.

The latest negotiations involve two claims, the article said:

  • An investigation into whether Windows prevented browser competition by tying Internet Explorer to the operating system. The EU has suggested Windows 7 offer a variety of browsers users can choose to install. Microsoft instead said it would ship Windows 7 in Europe without any browser at all.
  • A claim that Microsoft did not provide competitors with enough information about Office software so that they could develop compatible products.
