The Eastside's finest: Kung Foo Grip + Giorgio Momurda
"Tropical Dogs" by Kung Foo Grip
It's finally here. "Indigo Children: Tales From the Other Side," the EP from spitfire rap duo Kung Foo Grip and producer Giorgio Momurda. Anticipated since last year, it's now available for pay-what-you-will at the group's bandcamp. Where local musicians commonly mention being "from the land of Microsoft," these guys actually are from Seattle's Eastside suburbs, where Microsoft has its HQ and Bill Gates lives. Rappers Greg Cypher and Fish emerge from their homeland's tract housing, sloped curbs and unwalkable expanses bursting with ideas and anger. Could they use an editor? Yes. Sometimes their rhymes feel the weight of too many nonspecific battle couplets. But their determination to make a mark is evident, and in the end, infectious. Through pure passion and great beats — from producer and fellow Eastsider Giorgio Momurda, who borrows from rave, industrial, reggae and pillow bass music — the whole project screams with forward momentum.
