Renton's 10-4 Roger offers "A Prayer for Guru"

Renton DJ 10-4 Roger has a heart, and it bleeds for hiphop heroes.

The last remixes I received from him were of famed, deceased producer J Dilla's work on the anniversary of his death, Feb. 10. They're still in my car, earning repeated replays. Get them along with a Dilla mix by DJ Sosa here.

Today, another thoughtful 10-4 Roger remix materialized, an instrumental reconstruction of Gang Starr track "Above the Clouds" (1996). Gangstarr's MC Guru was hospitalized recently (boingboing has the reason as "heart attack") and is on Roger's mind.

"A Prayer for Guru" keeps the cloudy feel and Asiatic-sounding plucked strings of "Above the Clouds," itself originally made from Sir John Phillip William Dankworth's "Two Piece Flower." But Roger's composition is even more reflective, built around plaintive woodwinds that other DJs might relegate to background atmosphere.
