What we talk about when we talk about indie rock: Seattle's Multo

"My Greedy Openings" by Multo

Yes, it used to signify something about business, and yes, bad things have come with the term's morphing into a stylistic label. But make no mistake: This is what we talk about when we talk about "indie rock." Multo is it, literally and figuratively.

A musical project fronted by Allan Lumba, UW PhD student, learner of history, and music blogger, Multo's songs stream at myspace.com/multomusic. They're anchored by a voice you've heard before, a soft, midrange falsetto mixture of James Mercer and Elliott Smith (check "Living Spree").

"My Greedy Openings" is built from piano eighth notes and an itchy fuzz-guitar micro-riff. Very Spoon-ish with the guitar, minimalist and emphatic; the way it's mixed sounds like it's coming from the other end of a large room. Not sure what Lumba's singing about, but I'll spend some time trying to figure it out.
