Kanye West's apology to Taylor Swift on "The Jay Leno Show"

Posted by Andrew Matson

Kanye West cried on "The Jay Leno Show" last night, or at least his eyes were watery, speech semi-inarticulate, and voice shaky while he apologized for what he did to Taylor Swift the night before at the MTV Video Music Awards: steal her spotlight, and microphone, and use both to big up Beyonce. Leno invoked West's deceased mother's hypothetical judgment on the matter.

Yesterday, I posted that West's outburst at the VMAs was perfectly punk. The comments section to that blog post quickly filled with pretty much zero support for my argument, which is that MTV is part of a sinister system that promotes musical and sexual sameness, and any high-profile disruption of that system by a pop star -- especially one with a hit song that includes the lyric, "I'ma get on MTV, mama" (West's "I'm Good" "The Good Life") -- is subversive and welcome.

[Two parts of the above sentence were wrong -- the song is called "Good Life," not "I'm Good," and in it, T-Pain sings "on the TV" and not "on MTV." Thanks to Twitter for pointing out both errors.]

Lots of people in the comments section thought I was way off-base. Almost every comment expressed that West was very much in the wrong for interrupting Swift's moment, that he displayed an extreme lack of respect, and ought to be embarrassed.

Kanye, apparently, agrees with everyone that disagreed with me yesterday.

He looked sad talking with Leno -- so sad, Leno tried to comfort him by briefly and awkwardly rubbing Kanye's knee.

Personally, if my mother died, I would cry every time she was mentioned. Maybe I'd eventually be able to appear calm while talking about my dead mother, but I have a feeling it would take many years. West's mom died two Novembers ago, and I think Leno asked about her because he wanted West to cry.

Regardless of how sorry West feels about what he did at the VMAs, his blog, where he published an apology, took it down, and published another one, is getting so much traffic that the page currently won't load on my computer.

Said West to Leno:

"So many celebrities, they never take the time off. I've never taken the time off to really -- you know, just music after music and tour after tour. I'm just ashamed that my hurt caused someone else's hurt. My dream of what awards shows are supposed to be, 'cause, and I don't try to justify it because I was just in the wrong. That's period. But I need to, after this, take some time off and just analyze how I'm going to make it through the rest of this life, how I'm going to improve."

Right after his apology, West took the stage with Jay-Z and Rihanna to perform "Run This Town," a West-produced song about dominance in general.

West is a talentless douchebag. I watched his pathetic apology on Leno. "So many celebrities, they never take the time off. I've...  Posted on September 15, 2009 at 3:09 PM by Ragman. Jump to comment
I don't care if he cried and and apologized on Leno. He's yet another classless "hip hop" singer who can't keep his mouth...  Posted on September 15, 2009 at 9:42 AM by YaddaYadda. Jump to comment
