Most gothic at No Depression Festival: Jessica Lea Mayfield
Posted by Andrew Matson
Jessica Lea Mayfield is a legitimate Queen of Darkness. The 19-year-old's mood and music made a big impression on me at Marymoor Park during the No Depression Festival Saturday.
Mayfield spoke slow, like she was sedated, and with an appealing lisp. She played even slower, strumming acoustic guitar with a lazy hand, singing from her stomach with what I took for unforced rural twang. There couldn't have been a better complement to her funeral-paced rock songs than her brother David's harsh, echoing guitar sound. It was like glaciers rubbing against each other. Together -- she in a black cowboy shirt worn as a dress, belt around her wrist-sized waist; he in wild auburn hair and long beard -- the Mayfields looked like they were in a world of their own.

Album version of "I'm Not Lonely Anymore" after the jump (it's much milder).
