More Handsome Furs
Posted by Andrew Matson
Well, as far as I can tell by looking around ye old internet, the only published review of Friday's Handsome Furs concert is The Stranger's, written by Eric Grandy.
After previewing the concert via my big interview with singer/guitarist Dan Boeckner, I thought maybe I wouldn't take notes at the show, that I'd rather just enjoy the music.
Holding a camera wasn't too much an impediment to that, so I took home a good video of "Legal Tender," the first song of Handsome Furs' set. But that's pretty much it. Other videos of lesser audio/visual quality are still on the Canon, along with some blurry photos.
All I'll mention about Grandy's review is I had his same feeling at the concert's beginning: "Whoa, whoa, whoa...this is like back to back to back to back hits!" It was "Legal Tender" into "Talking Hotel Arbat Blues" into "All We Want, Baby, is Everything" into "I'm Confused," all strong songs from recent Furs album Face Control.
But there was no slack after the opening salvo. Song after song, Handsome Furs served pop music raw, in steroided ingredients. Boeckner's guitar went all colors of noise and power, his voice at turns smooth and winningly ragged; he seemed to suffer for his sounds, shaking like he had hypothermia and also a recent adrenaline injection. He was a container with contents under pressure. His wife Alexei Perry head-banged and arm-pumped over a table with synthesizers on it. It is rumored, and I cannot confirm, that one of her breasts fell out of her dress. She, like Boeckner, seemed to have electricity in her veins the whole time.
