Sasquatch! post #6: Animal Collective
Posted by Andrew Matson
From New York City by way of Baltimore, Animal Collective just played some of the weirdest music Sasquatch! will host.
The band didn't look like much on stage, but the late-day sun and epic Columbia River backdrop forgave that. Animal Collective sounded like a whole lot, though...everyone sang, for one thing, and capably, and whether members played keyboards, machines, or their own voices, every sound was delivered through a ton of echo, repeated over and over again. Everything was a loop. The songs were loops stacked into loop towers.
If you didn't like it, the effect was probably one of the more grating experiences you could have. If you stayed with the band for whole songs, though, it was hypnotic, and with so many people watching, the attempt alone, to mesmerize thousands of people with music so strange, had to win you over.
It did me, anyhow. Then I had to leave and blog.
Next show: Mos Def? The Decemberists? Yeah Yeah Yeahs? I'll try for all three.
"My Girls" (see comments section for naming controversy)
