Wife: Married Sharon Rupprecht on Dec. 27, 1970. She is the author of "Safe at Home, a Baseball Wife's Story," co-written with Dick Costa.
Children: Four daughters, Kim (29), Melissa (27), Pam (25) and Shelly (15), and a son, Andy (23). Andy Hargrove is a senior first baseman at Kent State.
High school: Perryton, Texas, graduated in 1968. All-state in football, all-conference in basketball, also played golf. School did not have a baseball team.
College: Played baseball, basketball and football at Northwest Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla. Inducted into hall of fame for school and NAIA. Earned degree in physical education and social sciences.
Playing career: Left-handed first baseman played from 1974 to 1985 with Texas, San Diego and Cleveland. Hit .290 with 80 home runs and 686 RBI.
Nicknames: The Human Rain Delay (as a player), Grover.
Coaching/managing experience: Started as a coach in the Cleveland organization, at Class A Batavia in 1986. Managed Class A Kinston in 1987, AA Williamsport in 1988 and AAA Colorado Springs in 1989. He was the Indians' first-base coach in 1990 and again in 1991, before being named manager in midseason. He managed the Indians through the 1999 season, and the Baltimore Orioles from 2000-03.
