Erik Bedard overwhelms Padres with a little help from Carlos Peguero

Can't expect much better than that out of Erik Bedard, who allowed only three singles over eight shutout innings tonight while fanning nine batters. Threw just 92 pitches as well and I thought he had a shot at his first complete game since July 2007 until Eric Wedge went with Chris Ray in the ninth.

San Diego got an unearned run off him for their only score.

Still, a 4-1 win is something the M's will gladly take. It moves them just 2 1/2 games out of the division lead.

And let's not forget, it would not have been a four-run lead without that leaping grab at the wall by Carlos Peguero (pictured above lending an arm to another pretty good pitcher). Not only did he save a two-run homer, but had the presence of mind to fire the ball back in, allowing the M's to double the runner off first base.

You know, Peguero doesn't always get great marks for his defense. But he was a worthy glove tonight. That was not an easy catch to make, even though the ball was hit high and hung up there a while.

We've seen outfielders misjudge their leaps on quite a few occasions this year -- especially in left field. This wasn't one of those occasions.

In fact, I give the defense high marks tonight...well, I was about to until Brendan Ryan muffed a routine double-play ball in the ninth. But up until that point...it was great. Again, the M's have got to keep their focus all game long. That unearned run could have been costly in a two-run game. In a four-run affair, not really, though it's a good thing the Padres' baserunners were daydreaming in the ninth or it could have gotten dangerous.
