Erik Bedard throws another bullpen session
Posted by Geoff Baker
Don't forget to check out our Around the Blogosphere segment, where we point out links to some of the more interesting blog posts on the Mariners.
Erik Bedard threw his second bullpen session since camp opened, uncorking pitches a bit harder than the last time today as he continues his comeback from shoulder surgery. We've said it often, but the M's could really use a healthy Bedard this season -- especially if he's ready by opening day. It would take a lot of pressure off the other arms in the rotation when it comes to picking up quality innings.
David Aardsma began trying to walk without the full aid of crutches this morning. Aardsma estimated he put about 30 percent weight on his foot as he began the process of trying to get back on a mound. He said earlier this week that he'd be taking a week, or a week-and-a-half before putting full weight on his foot.
"I'm just going to take it slow and see how it feels,'' he said today. "If I wake up the next morning and I'm sore, then I might scale it back a bit. We'll just see how it goes.''
Felix Hernandez was busy tending to fans gathered at the complex here. So busy that he didn't notice the little squirrel creeping up the back of his head and underneath his cap.
Yusmeiro Petit finally arrived this morning, a few days late to camp after visa troubles in Venezulea. The Mariners now have all of their pitchers and catchers present and accounted for.
More early arrivals continue to show up on the position-player side of things. Chone Figgins was the latest to arrive, two days ahead of mandatory physicals.
The first full-squad workout takes place on Saturday.
Also caught up a bit with Dan Cortes, the flamethrowing relief pitcher who got in some games with the Mariners last September. Cortes has added a rather complex series of tattoos streaking down his right forearm.
The design is meant to symbolize the struggle between good and evil. If you read our profile on Cortes from last spring, you know he's had experience with both.
