End of 8th, 1-0 Seattle: Brandon League replaces French to start the 8th. The starter finished with one hit allowed through seven innings, four Ks and 3 BBs on 99 pitches (64 for strikes). After a leadoff walk, League induced a fielder's choice -- nearly a double play -- then gets the DP when Figgins gathers a grounder, steps on second and throws low to first, Kotchman with the dig. 1-2-3 stuff for Carmona in the 8th, he really settled down after the first. Writing duties will take over now.

End of 7th, 1-0 Seattle: After a flyout by Cabrera, French walked Choo for the second time and then allowed his first hit on a hard groundball by Shelley Duncan up the middle. He gets a nice applause by the home crowd for the impressive no-hit bid. Immediately after allowing the hit, he got a nice double-play when Jayson Nix lined out to left and Saunders doubled off Choo at second base. On the Mariners side, Saunders drew a two-out walk, but Josh Wilson flew out to end it. Not much to it. Announced attendance: 17,271.

End of the 6th, 1-0 Seattle: Another harmless frame for French, getting Donald (grounder to short), Marson (foul pop to Moore) and Brantley (fly to Sounders) in order. Franklin Gutierrez got on base with a walk and stole second, but Lopez grounded out to short to end the threat. On we go...

End of the 5th, 1-0 Seattle: More 1-2-3 stuff from French, who gets three easy popouts/flyouts -- two to Josh Wilson in shallow left-center and one to Ichiro. On the home side, Carmona got Moore and Saunders out in order before allowing a hard single to left by Josh Wilson. Ichiro ended the inning by grounding out to second.

End of the 4th, 1-0 Seattle: Still no hits allowed by French (when am I supposed to stop writing that?) but he did walk another batter in Choo before getting Duncan to fly out. French has four strikeouts and has faced one over the minimum. Carmona retired Branyan and Lopez to start it, then got a third out when Kotchman was nailed trying to extend a single to a double, Duncan to Donald.

End of the 3rd, 1-0 Seattle: French retired the first eight in a row, the last of which came on a very deep fly to Gutierrez, but allowed his first base-runner on a four-pitch walk to No. 9 hitter Lou Marson. French then picked off the Cleveland catcher to end it (1-3-6-3). Carmona has settled down too and had a 1-2-3 inning, striking out Figgins and Gutierrez to end it after Ichiro flied out deep to center.

End of 2nd, 1-0 Seattle: Not many worries for French so far, who had another 1-2-3 inning. In fact, 18 of his first 20 pitches were strikes. In the bottom half, Adam Moore struck out swinging, then Michael Saunders drew Carmona's third walk. But again a double play ended things when Josh Wilson grounded to Cabrera, who touched second before throwing to first. Also, we just got word that Justin Masterson won't pitch for Cleveland on Sunday, he's replaced by Jeanmar Gomez.

End of 1st, 1-0 Seattle: Luke French looked very comfortable in a 1-2-3 top of the inning, throwing nearly all his pitches for strikes (just one missed). Ichiro left off the home side with an infield single followed by a walk by Chone Figgins. A Franklin Gutierrez single up the middle brought in Ichiro then Russell Branyan walked to load the bases with no outs. The danger quickly subsided as Jose Lopez struck out and Casey Kotchman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat. Mariners surely could've done better there.

Pregame: It's a beautiful day here in Seattle and people continue to file into Safeco Field. I'm used to covering games across the street at Qwest Field, but I'm happy to provide updates here on tonight's game against Cleveland.
