I was pleased to see that Paul McAnulty, who inspired me to write a blog post last year on the archetype of the Lumbering Minor-League Slugger, is in the Angels' lineup. Never saw that coming, I've got to say.

Well, Don Wakamatsu had a double-dose of bad news on the injury front.

First Erik Bedard has had another setback in his comeback from labrum surgery. While playing catch today, he felt more discomfort in his left shoulder, and was sent to see Lewis Yocum, the Angels orthopedist and the doctor who performed both the labrum on Bedard last Aug. 14, and a previous shoulder operation on Sept. 26, 2008.

Wakamatsu said the team would formulate a new game plan for Bedard once they get a report from Yocum.

And then there's Russell Branyan, who is out at least two days after a weird injury. Wakamatsu said a table fell on Branyan's left foot this morning in his hotel room, cutting and bruising a toe.

"He went to close the curtains this morning at 5,'' Wakamatsu said. "He knocked over the table and it landed on his foot.''

Branyan will sit for two days and be day-to-day after that, the manager said.

Mike Sweeney, on the DL with a back injury, will take batting practice today and tomorrow, and if all goes well, will probably be sent out on a rehab assignment.

Newly arrived left-hander Chris Sneddon will be used as a long man out of the bullpen for the time being. But Wakamatsu said Seddon is a candidate to start on Monday, as is David Pauley, who pitched well last Friday as a fill-in for Cliff Lee after the trade to Texas.

"We have two days, really, to decide that,'' he said. "We have a six-man pen right now. The next two days we have to figure out if I have to use those guys or not. We'll consider everything right now.''

The Mariners' other new pitcher, Jamey Wright, will work out of the bullpen.

"I was around him in Texas for a couple of years, and know his makeup and character,'' Wakamatsu said. "Even in Kansas City, he was kind of a workhorse. We're definitely looking to protect Brandon League. He's had to take the brunt of the bullpen work. To have a veteran guy who can fill different roles is a necessity. He's a guy that can pitch just about anywhere and give us innings, which is what we're looking for.''
