Josh Bard to DL, Eliezer Alfonzo called up and Jack Hannahan designated for assignment

Turns out that calf injury for Josh Bard (photo right) was serious, since he's been put on the 15-day DL with a muscle pull. That means the M's have brought up Eliezer Alfonzo (photo left) from Class AAA. To clear roster room, Jack Hannahan (photo middle) has been designated for assignment.

Tough break for Bard, who was playing his way into the No. 1 catching role for this team.

And for Hannahan, who appeared to have found a home with the M's before suffering a groin injury in spring training.

Bard, 32, was hitting .277 (6-for-22) with three doubles, a homer and four RBI in the eight games he'd played since a call-up 12 days ago.

Alfonzo, 31, hit .267 in 25 games for Class AAA Tacoma, with five doubles, three homers and 10 RBI in 25 games. He threw out four of 18 would-be base-stealers.

As for Hannahan, he hit just .190 in 100 ABs for Tacoma and never played himself back into contention for a spot with the big league club. He'd come to spring training looking like a sure bet to be the team's utility infielder. As you can see from the photo on the opposite page, the Mariners were even priming him to be an emergency catcher as well as a first base, third base, shortstop and second base option.

Now, it's unclear whether he'll remain with the organization.
