Mariners vs. Texas Rangers: April 30, 2010 game thread
Posted by Mason Kelley
Final: Texas 2, Seattle 0
10:03 p.m.: Rangers manager Ron Washington was just ejected. Eric Byrnes is called out looking to end the inning.
9:53 p.m.: Ichiro opened the 11th with a slap single down the left-field line. Chone Figgins then dropped down a bunt single that brought a smile to his face and sent Ichiro to second. Franklin Gutierrez struck out and Jose Lopez worked a walk to load the bases. Eric Byrnes tried to lay down a suicide squeeze, but pulled the bat back and Ichiro was out in a close play at the plate when Matt Treanor initially struggled to find the ball in the dirt.
9:48 p.m.: That's another nice inning from League, who sets down the side in order in the 11th.
Frank Francisco will pitch the bottom half of the frame for Texas.
9:42 p.m.: Sweeney grounds into a double play to end the inning and we're going to the 11th.
9:38 p.m.: Darren O'Day on to pitch for the Rangers with the bases loaded and one out. Mike Sweeney on to pinch-hit for Jack Wilson.
9:37 p.m.: Ken Griffey Jr. led off the 10th with an infield single, beating the Texas shift. Then, with Eric Byrnes pinch running, Milton Bradley blooped a double down the left-field line. Adam Moore was intentionally walked to load the bases.
9:26 p.m.: Lewis' day is done for Texas. Darren Oliver is on to pitch the 10th.
9:23 p.m.: And here we go, on to the 10th. The Mariners are 0-1 in extra-inning games this season.
9:14 p.m.: David Aardsma gets the job done in the ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
Colby Lewis is back out for the ninth. He's thrown 102 pitches.
9:08 p.m.: Colby Lewis has retired the last 18 Seattle batters he's faced.
David Aardsma is on to pitch the ninth for the Mariners. We're still scoreless.
9:01 p.m.: Mark Lowe keeps the Rangers off the scoreboard in the eighth. A walk and a wild pitch did put Matt Treanor on second with two outs, but Lowe struck out Craig Gentry to end the inning.
8:51 p.m.: Interesting end to the seventh inning. With two outs Casey Kotchman appeared safe on a throwing error by catcher Matt Treanor. However, Kotchman was called out for running out of the baseline.
That brought manager Don Wakamatsu charging out of the dugout. The boos rained down from the crowd.
Lee's night is done. Seven innings, three hits, eight strikeouts, no walks, 98 pitches (73 strikes). Mark Lowe is now on the mound for the Mariners.
8:43 p.m.: Lee got Ian Kinsler looking to end the seventh. The lefty's now at 98 pitches, so his day should be over.
8:39 p.m. Lee is out to start the seventh, having thrown 89 pitches -- 66 strikes.
8:30 p.m.: Through six innings Lee has thrown 89 pitches. The bullpen is up, so we'll see if his day is done. He struck out Michael Young looking to end the sixth. He's given up three hits.
The announced attendance tonight is 34,055.
8:18 p.m.: After a leadoff single by Ian Kinsler in the fifth, Jack Wilson made a great over-the-shoulder catch to on a fly ball to center from Ryan Garko. Justin Smoak then lined out to Chone Figgins at second, who tossed to first, completing an inning-ending double play.
8:06 p.m.: Lee made it through 3 1/3 hitless innings, but an thoughts of a no-hitter in his Seattle debut were put to rest by Michael Young, who singled with one out in the fourth.
Elvis Andrus opened the frame, striking out for the second time. Keep in mind Lee is on a 90-100 pitch limit and he's right around 70, so he might be done after the fifth, depending on how things go.
7:48 p.m.: That's another impressive inning from Lee. He struck out Justin Smoak to open the frame. Matt Treanor flew out to center and Craig Gentry popped to first.
7:41 p.m.: The Mariners have two hits through two innings. Jack Wilson ends the second with a pop up to second base, leaving Casey Kotchman on second and Adam Moore at first.
7:32 p.m.: Lee tosses another strong frame. Vladimir Guerrero grounds to first. Ian Kinsler hits a fly ball to left and Ryan Garko struck out.
7:17 p.m.: Strong start for Lee. He set down the side in order in the first. He struck out Elvis Andrus, Michael Young hit a grounder to second and Josh Hamilton struck out.
7:05 p.m.: J.R. Celski, the 2010 Winter Olympic medalist, threw out the first pitch here at Safeco Field.
6:54 p.m.: Here's a quick pregame note. Infielder Jack Hannahan has been returned from his injury rehabilitation assignment, reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and optioned back to Triple-A Tacoma.
6:50 p.m.: Well, it's a gloomy day here at the ballpark weather-wise, but the roof is open at Safeco. It was raining during batting practice and they close the roof, but it was recently reopened.
While the weather outside might not be pleasant there is a buzz at the ballpark with the anticipation of Cliff Lee's Seattle debut.
It is his first chance to pitch since Game 5 of the World Series, and a lot has happened since then, but he will take the mound with a chance to put the Mariners back over .500.
Texas (10-12) sends Colby Lewis to the mound. He's 3-0 with a 3.80 ERA. This is the first outing during a nine-game homestand, coming off a 2-4 road trip. The Mariners will trot out Lee, followed by Felix Hernandez on Saturday, the one-two punch the team hoped for when they made the deal to bring Lee over from the Phillies.
