Let's try that Mariners roster once again -- this time for real and with Ryan Langerhans on the team

Posted by Geoff Baker

Ok, we're back for another attempt at math. By the way, I'm having a great 24 hours, since I wrote in today's paper that Mike Sweeney could be lost if the team were to outright him to Class AAA. Which, of course, is ridiculous because Sweeney is on a minor league deal and can just start the season in AAA without being lost. The team had prepared Sweeney for the possibility he could start the year in the minors -- under the assumption the M's put Cliff Lee on the roster for five games to serve his suspension -- but I'm now told that likely won't happen. Lee will go on the DL and Sweeney will make the team right away.

Ryan Garko will be taken off the roster as soon as his waiver period expries, freeing up a roster spot for Sweeney.

So, there you go. Not quite as dire a decision-making process. Still not the easiest, but the team does have options like keeping Ryan Langerhans and not putting him on the DL. So much for my fuzzy math. I need a weekend off. In any case, let's try this again.

Garrett Olson was sent to AAA this morning, which was expected. The team will open with an 11-man pitching staff, barring a last-minute trade or signing.

Expect the M's to be scanning the waiver wires this weekend as teams start to dump guys. But it's not all that likely they add someone.

Jesus Colome will not make it because he's not on the roster and the team just doesn't have open spots. Same for Josh Wilson. Both could be added at some point but will not break camp.

So, let's try this again.

MARINERS ROSTER TO OPEN SEASON

RHP Felix Hernandez
RHP Ian Snell
LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith
RHP Doug Fister
LHP Jason Vargas

BULLPEN

RHP David Aardsma
RHP Mark Lowe
RHP Brandon League
RHP Shawn Kelley
RHP Sean White
RHP Kanekoa Texeira

1B Casey Kotchman
2B Chone Figgins
3B Jose Lopez
SS Jack Wilson
LF Milton Bradley
CF Franklin Gutierrez
RF Ichiro
C Rob Johnson
DH Ken Griffey Jr.

C Adam Moore
OF Eric Byrnes/Ryan Langerhans
INF Matt Tuiasosopo

That looks about right to me. Most importantly, it adds up to 25. I don't do April Fools jokes on a pro news site. The earlier post was merely a brain cramp...or two.
