Lee set to make Mariner spring debut

Posted by Bob Condotta

Finally, blue skies in Peoria as the Mariners begin to roll in for another day of spring training.

It figures to be an interesting one as Cliff Lee, the prize off-season acquisition from the Phillies, will take the mound in nearby Surprise against the Rangers, his first official action of the spring.

His debut has been delayed after he had off-season surgery to repair bone spurs in his left foot.

He pitched in a simulated game last week, throwing 33 pitches against a group of minor leaguers, and wasn't as sharp as he normally is, allowing two singles, two walks and hitting a batter.

Mariner manager Don Wakamatsu said yesterday he will look for a little more precision from Lee today, saying that his command "was a little erratic'' in the simulated game. "We'd like to see him down in the zone a little bit more and consistent.''

Lee could throw 40-50 pitches or so today as all pitchers begin to stretch themselves out a little bit more with now under four weeks to go to Opening Day.

Here's the rest of today's lineup:

Ichiro, RF
Chone Figgins, 2B
Milton Bradley, LF
Mike Sweeney, DH
Casey Kotchman, 1B
Franklin Gutierrez, CF
Adam Moore, C
Josh Wilson, 3B
Jack Wilson, SS

Other pitchers scheduled to go include Luke French, Garrett Olson and Sean White.

As for the lineup, the interesting notes are Jack Wilson returning after being out since last Friday with hamstring tightness. He says he could have played the last 2-3 days, but a rainout and the way the lineup worked has held him out.

Also, Gutierrez will play for a third straight day as that shoulder gets a good test.

Among those not making the trip are Ken Griffey Jr., and Jose Lopez.

Also, David Aardsma is scheduled to throw a bullpen session this morning.

UPDATE --- Here's Texas' lineup for today:

29 Julio Borbon, CF
6 Esteban German, 3B
7 David Murphy, LF
27 Vladimir Guerrero, DH
17 Nelson Cruz, RF
19 Chris Davis, 1B
14 Joaquin Arias, SS
2 Taylor Teagarden, C
15 Ray Olmedo, 2B
36 C.J. Wilson, LHP

And the first round of cuts for the Mariners is expected soon. A couple lockers that are empty this morning are Ryan Feierabend and catcher David Baron. We should get the full list soon.
