Padres 9, Mariners 3: Jack Wilson scares team, but says he should be fine
Posted by Geoff Baker
Tough to find much good news on a day the Mariners lose, 9-3 to the San Diego Padres courtesy of an eight-run third inning. Turns out it could have been far worse. Jack Wilson left the game after the third inning and manager Don Wakamatsu was told he'd pulled his hamstring. Wilson had just scored from first base on a triple by Ichiro when he alerted the training staff that something was up.
Wakamatsu relayed the hamstring pull information to the media post-game and naturally it caused somewhat of a stir since Wilson was plagued by hamstring problems throughout the middle of last season in both Pittsburgh and Seattle.
Wilson had already left the park by the time we got to the clubhouse, but I got hold of him moments ago and he told me there was nothing to fear. His leg did feel a twinge, but it was only minor tightness.
"I didn't pull anything,'' Wilson said. "I felt some tightness in my leg behind my knee and after everything I went through last season, I thought 'I'm not going through this again' so I just shut it down right away. I went inside, the trainer looked at it and it was nothing serious.''
Wilson said the pain was in the lower part of his hamstring area, not the upper part that caused him so many problems in 2009. He says he plans to partake in workouts tomorrow, but may or may not do any running depending on how it feels.
"It was just such a long inning of sitting around,'' Wilson said of the eight-run third by the Padres. "And then, on the triple, I had to do a lot of running right away, so that just tweaked it. But it should be fine. It's nothing serious.''
The Mariners have built a lot of their infield defense around the glove of Wilson and can ill-afford to lose him for any prolonged stretches.
Not a whole lot of good news today, but Jose Lopez did handle the grounders sent his way at third base while going 1-for-3 with a double.
Chad Cordero looked far better in tossing a scoreless ninth inning -- allowing one hit -- than he did in that intrasquad game the other day.
"We talked about his nerves the other day, but I didnt see it at all,'' Wakamatsu said. "He came in after that and said 'Boy, that was fun.' So, that's nice. I like what's coming out of his hand. He's a command guy...to see him where he was last year to now, it's a tremendous improvement.''
Luke French had two scoreless innings with just one walk allowed and worked out of that jam with a runner on third and one out.
Matt Tuiasosopo came up with another hit and is now batting .400 on the spring -- though he grounded into a game-ending double play. He also got some time in at shortstop, though he didn't have to handle any grounders.
"I just didn't think he looked very comfortable,'' Wakamatsu said. "It looked like he was forcing the ball a little bit.''
Olson will probably be just as uncomfortable when he dissects his outing tomorrow.
Not a good start for him. Not a good day for the M's. This team needs pitching to win. Didn't get it from Olson today. Got it from just about everyone else, but when you give up an eight-spot, that's the game right there.
